Meet at the HILL CHURCH at 12 noon to carpool to Canterbury. We’re visiting the Creamery Brook Retirement village and pierce Baptist Home. Join us for some decorating, caroling, and a chance to visit with seniors.

For youth in grades 7-12
9:00 am to 3:00 PM at the East Woodstock Church.
Help with child care so parents can tend to holiday preparations. You can sign up to assist with, baking, crafts, outdoor play, board games, or story time. Proceeds will go toward our National Youth Event trip in July.

It’s a holiday so come and help us serve a meal to senior citizens in our community!
There are lots of ways to help:
-Food Prep on Thursday from 2-5
-Bake cookies or cupcakes for dessert
-Serve on Friday (arrive at 10:30. Wear black & white)
-Clean up from 12:30 to 2:30.
All workers get a free meal. Invite a friend to work with you.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23
12:30 PM at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock

Giv2 is for all youth in grades 7-12. Friends are welcome!

GATHER-- Meet for lunch and fellowship at the First Congregational Church of Woodstock at 543 Route 169 on Woodstock Hill.
GO-- Carpool to Eastford and help with Trail Maintenance at Camp Nahaco. This beautiful park borders Crystal Pond. We will pick up branches and other debris from the recent hurricane. Please dress for the weather and bring work gloves. In the event of rain, we will do an indoor project in the dining hall. Celebrate our work with a campfire and s’mores.
REFLECT -- Learn how two towns work together to protect this beautiful spot.
RETURN-- We will return to the Hill Church by 4:30

Adults are needed to assist with lunch, take photos, and/or drive to Eastford.

10 am at East Woodstock Congregational Church Come to worship and gather to see our Compassion Camp 11 video. Then gather for conversation and snacks when the children leave for church school.

SEPTEMBER 25
SIMPLY SMILES INFO SESSION- TRIP TO SOUTH DAKOTA
7 PM at the East Woodstock Church. Come and find out about this opportunity to serve in South Dakota. The trip will be on August 18-25, 2012 at the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation Project. Church members from E. Woodstock, the Hill, and the Gilead Church in Lebanon have are collaborating to sponsor this trip. The minimum age to participate is 14 years old. Mornings will be spent repairing and/or building homes and afternoons running the summer camp. Each day of camp will be based around a different Lakota value.

This church has been serving as a shelter and distribution point for MA tornado victims. We will probably do outdoor work picking up sticks so work gloves and work boots are required. Wear you Compassion Camp t-shirt. Bring your own bag lunch and water bottle.

People’s Harvest Garden in Pomfret
Pick vegetables that will be distributed to local soup kitchens and pantries.
Bring a bag lunch and a SWIM SUIT today. We are planning for a PM pool party!

Friday, July 29
Covenant Soup Kitchen and WAIM in Willimantic
Wear sneakers and your Compassion Camp t-shirt today.
Some of us will serve a meal at the soup kitchen and some will help with projects at Windham Area Interfaith Ministry.

[FYI—SYG workers get a free meal and Yes, you can ask a friend to work with you!] Money raised will help cover the 2011 SYG Budget.

BOSTON URBAN OUTREACH

WINTER MISSION TRIP

MARCH 4-6, 2011
FOR YOUTH IN GRADES 9-12
AND ADULTS
Spend a weekend working with the City Mission Society and learn about Homelessness Prevention the Youth Peace Empowerment Programs. We’ll stay at the Charlestown UCC Church, serve a meal at the Pilgrim soup kitchen, and attend an urban worship service on Sunday morning. The City Mission Society http://www.cmsboston.org/ is the oldest multi-service agency in New England. CMS has been offering assistance to low-income and marginalized men, women, and children in Boston since 1816.
· 48 hour immersion experience runs from 3 PM on Friday to 3 PM on Sunday.
· $80 covers CMS fee, transportation, and all meals.
o Send a $30 deposit or full payment to reserve your spot.
o Scholarships are available.
· Friends are welcome, just give them a copy of this form.
There will be an important planning meeting at 7 PM on February 13.

Help out with the Special Olympics Bowling Tournament in Brooklyn. We need folks to either escort the handicapped participants to the lanes or keep score for games. Meet at the Hill Church at 7:30 am to carpool to the Friendly Bowl in Brooklyn. The event ends at 12 noon. Bring a few dollars so we can stop for lunch and return by 1:00.

Barefoot Sunday is coming on May 9.
We invite you to bring your gently used shoes and leave them at the door as you enter worship. Include $1 per pair to cover shipping costs. Shoes will be distributed to needy families by soles 4 souls. Please talk to Dianna Rebello if you would like to help out.

Dust off your blades and join us for some winter fun. We will meet at the Hill Church at 4:15 PM and carpool to Storrs. Cost is $5 for admission. Rental skates are available at $4/pair. Skating session is from 5:45 to 6:55. We will return to Woodstock by 7:45 PM. Friends are welcome but be sure to call Deb by Jan. 8 to reserve your spot.

WORCESTER FELLOWSHIP is outdoor worship and a shared meal with the homeless on Sunday, October 11. All youth in grades 8 -12 are welcome to join us. Meet at the EAST WOODSTOCK CHURCH at 10 am to do food prep. We should return by about 3:30. Please contact Debby by Wednesday, October 7 to reserve your spot.

Even if you can’t make it consider making a donation.
-White socks for men and women. (Homeless people are on their feet all day and rarely have access to laundry)
-Snack items like chewy granola bars (Many clients have problems with their teeth)

CITY REACH

What is CITY REACH?
City Reach is a chance to learn about homelessness from people who are homeless or who those who have lived on the streets. All Youth Group members are welcome to join us for this powerful 24 hour immersion experience in Boston on Friday, January 23. We will offer hospitality, food, and clothing to guests at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul. We will also participate in a street outreach team in downtown Boston.

The plan is to leave Woodstock at about 5 PM and return before dinner on Saturday, January 24. Cost will be approximately $60 per person. Registration information will be posted soon on the church website but speak to Debby Kirk or Charlie Bottieri if you would like to get involved. Grow your heart by serving others!

Youth Group will be collecting travel size toiletries, and socks, hats, and gloves for men beginning on January 4. Please leave your donations in the CITY REACH boxes at church.

Compassion Camp 2008 will be held on the week of July 14-18.

All students who have completed grades 6-9 are invited to join us for a week of fun, friends and service learning. This is a day program (9:00 am to 3:00 PM) for youth who want to help neighbors in need. We will use the church as a home base and take different field trip each day to put faith in action. After the Night watch program at the Catehdral we took the subway to Ground Zero, visited St. Paul's chapel and paused to pray for peace, had lunch and viewed the Statue of Liberty from the South Street Seaport, toured the Tenement Museum on the East Side, had dinner in China Town and looked in the shops on Canal Street. We had a vertical tour of the Cathedral on Saturday night with views of the Manhattan skyline from the roof top. On Sunday morning we drove to Riverside Church and celebrated the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. in worship.

All items will be donated to DAILY BREAD FOOD PANTRY on Grove Street in Putnam. Daily Bread is an Emergency Food Pantry that serves clients in Putnam, Pomfret and Woodstock. The pantry relies on donations from community groups and distributed over $75,000 worth of food last year.

The Souper Bowl http://www.souperbowl.org is a nation wide effort for hunger relief. In 2007, over 14,000 church and groups participated and generated over 8 million dollars. Please support the youth of our church in this effort to “love our neighbors” by making your donation before February 3.

Community Kitchen serves the poor and elderly of Northeastern, CT. Our church prepares a meal on the second Monday of every month and takes it to the soup kitchen in North Grosvenordale.

Leaving: Meet us at the Hill Church by 2:45 PM on Friday, September 28. We will pack up and leave by 3:00 PM. You can bring your duffel bag to church on Friday morning before school and leave your stuff in the Great Room where we have our meetings.

Returning: We will leave Silver Lake at about 1:30 on Sunday. You can tell your parents to be at the Hill Church to meet us 4:00 PM.

Medical Form: If your parents have not yet sent in you emergency medical consent form, make sure they do this immediately. We cannot take you on the trip without it! There is a link to a pdf copy on the Youth page

What to bring: We are staying in a heated lodge with restrooms, showers, fireplace, and kitchen. We will spend a lot of time outside so please bring weather appropriate clothes including a sweatshirt and windbreaker. Try to pack everything in one small duffle bag only-- our space in the vans is very limited!

You will need a sleeping bag, towels and toiletries (soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.), outdoor clothes, jacket, and sneakers (we will spend time outside!), a FLASHLIGHT for our night hike and a BANDANA if you have one. Optional: a favorite CD, guitar, cards, board games.

All of your meals will be provided. You will not need to bring any money with you.

UCC SYNOD IN HARTFORD

Get on the bus! Join the group from our area who will be attending worship at the 50th birthday party of the United Church of Christ. The synod is a HUGE meeting that happens every other year and the CT Conference is the host this time. Join with over 6000 faithful folks from all over the country for the 3:00 PM celebration in the Hartford Civic Center. This is going to be an amazing experience!
We are chartering a bus so sign up in advance if you want to reserve a seat. Cost is ~$12 per person but the first ten to sign up get a 50% SYG discount. Estimated departure time is 1:30 PM, but call the church office at 928-7405 to confirm.

PROGRAM on AFFORDABLE HOUSING ISSUES at 7:00 PM

Bike & Build is a nonprofit organization that empowers young adults to work for change in the world, particularly an end to poverty housing in the United States. Each summer, participants travel by bike across the country to raise awareness, labor, and funds to work towards affordable housing for all Americans. In preparation for the trip, each rider must raise $4000, and they use this money to fund affordable housing efforts and organizations they encounter on their ride. During the trip, they work at least once a week with Habitat for Humanity or like-minded groups on actual building sites.

Thirty students on the Providence-to-Seattle trip will be arriving in Woodstock on Sunday, June 10. They have asked if they can spread out their sleeping bags in the Great Room and spend the night. Can you help us provide hospitality? We are looking for a few volunteers to help prepare a meal, provide baked goods, or donate breakfast items. Please contact Debby Kirk at

We will serve the hungry at a local a soup kitchen, work with the handicapped at the Center of Hope and visit the Heifer Farm in Rutland, MA. Cost is $80 per student. HELP WANTED:
Adult and older teen volunteers are needed for Compassion Camp and Vacation Bible School which runs June 25-29. Support our children, enrich your faith, and get involved with these programs. Speak to Ellie Donahue or Debby Kirk if you can spare a few hours or help on our planning teams.

SYG MISSIONS TRIP TO BOSTON
FRIDAY, JANUARY 19 – SATURDAY, JANUARY 20

A warm coat, a hot meal, and a cozy bed to sleep in-- These are things we all take for granted. But how do the homeless survive on a winter night? CityReach is a chance to learn about homelessness from people who are homeless or who have been homeless. Put your faith in action and participate in ministry to poor. We will offer hospitality, food, and clothing to guests on Saturday morning inside at the Cathedral Church of Saint Paul. We will also participate in a street outreach team in downtown Boston. We will bring donations of good used clothing and food to make bag lunches for the guests. This is an opportunity to grow in spirit and to make a difference!

 24 hour Immersion Experience from 5 PM Friday to 5PM Saturday.
 $50 covers registration fee, transportation, supplies, and meals.
 Friends are welcome, just pick up a registration form at church.
 Space is limited to 15 students so sign up today!

SUPER RESPONSE TO 2006 SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

It started as a response to prayer at a South Carolina Youth Group meeting in 1990: “Lord, as we enjoy the Super Bowl Football game, help us to be mindful of those who are without even a bowl of soup to eat.” Since then, the Souper Bowl of Caring has grown to include over 12,000 churches and has generated more than $28 million to help the hungry.

Our Senior High Youth Group took donations after worship on February 5 at both the Hill Church and the East Woodstock Congregational Church. The total collected for 2006 was a new record! $563.68 was placed in the soup kettles at the church exits on that day. ALL money raised will be sent directly to the COMMUNITY KITCHEN OF NORTHEASTERN, CT for local relief.

Higher fuel bills and soaring electricity prices put a strain on family budgets and many people in our area have to make the hard choice between staying warm or putting food on the table. Your gift helps fight hunger and makes a real difference to neighbors in Woodstock and surrounding towns.

Come and join the competition. Test your wits, your skills, and your nerves at this all-night event. Plus Make-your-own grinders and wraps, SYG Talent Show, and Midnight Meditation; It’s a sleepover at church! We finish with a hot breakfast and Sunday morning worship at the Hill.

You’ll need a sleeping bag and pillow.

Meet at the Hill Church at 1:15PM and we will carpool to Pomfret. All ages will enjoy this presentation of the Gospel of Matthew using skits and lively music. Invite a friend and call Deb by 1/5 to reserve a spot. Cost is $8 for students and $10 for adults.
